Meet the Editors

Lauren Wingenroth, Editor in Chief

Lauren is the editor in chief of Dance Teacher magazine and the Dance Business Weekly newsletter. She also serves as an associate editor at Dance Magazine. Originally from the Outer Banks of North Carolina, Lauren is a graduate of Barnard College, where she studied dance and English and was an Athena Leadership Scholar. She has performed works by artists like Annie-B Parson, Mark Dendy and Reggie Wilson, and has choreographed several original musical theater works. She has presented her research on gender inequity in ballet at the Women in Dance Leadership Conference, and served as an adjudicator at the American College Dance Festival. She previously served as the chair of the Dance/NYC Junior Committee. Contact her at:

Basia Hellwig, Founding Editor

Basia was editor in chief of Dance Retailer News from 2016 to 2019 and wrote for the magazine for almost a decade. She has edited magazines and websites for brands such as Consumer Reports, Reader’s Digest, Scientific American and AARP. She launched and edited Working Woman magazine’s entrepreneurial coverage, which was a National Magazine Award finalist, and created the first website of Catalyst, a nonprofit with a mission to accelerate progress for women at work. Karen Hildebrand, Founding Editor

As editor in chief of Dance Teacher and previously as education editor for Dance Magazine, Karen Hildebrand has championed the concerns of dance studio owners since 2001. Before that she was active in the Denver/Boulder dance community, serving as executive director of Colorado Contemporary Dance and on the board of the Colorado Dance Festival. Joe Sullivan, Producer

Joe Sullivan is managing editor of Dance Teacher and formerly of Dance Retailer News. He’s also helped edit two dance books: Shoot Me While I’m Happy, a tap dance memoir by Jane Goldberg, and American Ballet Theatre’s The Healthy Dancer: ABT Guidelines for Dancer Health. Previously he’s covered business and technology topics for CIO magazine, written company guides for MBA students and moonlighted at a hedge fund. Emily Giacalone, Graphic Designer

Emily Giacalone is art director of Dance Teacher and Pointe. She got her start in magazine design with George Magazine and has worked on various publications including Vogue, Forbes, Four Seasons, Show People, Pilates Style, Pointe and Dance Retailer News. She earned a BFA in Communication Design from Pratt Institute.
